Habitat For Humanity Run/Walk

The WEST METRO HABITAT FOR HUMANITY ALLIANCE SPONSOR FOURTH ANNUAL RUN/WALK AND BLITZ BUILD TO BENEFIT HABITAT FOR HUMANITY COLUMBIA

The West Metro Habitat Alliance, a consortium of five churches in the Cayce/West Columbia area, will combine a blitz build with the fourth annual Habitat for Humanity Run/Walk on Saturday, October 7. The 10K run and 5K walk will start at 8:00 a.m. at Providence Presbyterian Church, just off Highway 378 in West Columbia. Proceeds from the event will be used to fund construction of Habitat for Humanity homes in the Cayce/West Columbia area.

The newly formed alliance is the expansion of Providence Presbyterian’s Habitat for Humanity mission efforts, featuring the annual run/walk that has benefitted the Central South Carolina Habitat for Humanity organization in the last three years. Area ministers met in early 2006 with Central SC Habitat representatives to explore the opportunty of bringing several congregations together to establish a concentrated effort to build Habitat homes in the West Metro community.

Churches participating in the West Metro Habitat for Humanity Alliance include:

“We’re so pleased to see these churches come together to raise the funds and provide the manpower needed to build homes in the West Metro area,” said Roy Cunningham, executive director of Central SC Habitat for Humanity. “We have identified a site for the home we’ll be building the week of the run/walk, and we hope to find several more sites in the area on which we can build homes.” Michael Bragan, minister of Providence Presbyterian, worked with the local Habitat organization to bring area ministers and congregations to the cause. “Our church, like many others, has supported a number of Habitat efforts over the years,” he said. “We were very interested in the opportunity to come together to help build homes and restore hope for families who need both.”

The blitz build will begin on Monday, October 2 on the grounds of Providence Presbyterian Church and will culminate during the Habitat for Humanity Run/Walk on Saturday morning, October 7. Volunteers from churches within the alliance will lend their building talents during the week, while runners and walkers will take to the streets in support of the mission.

The Habitat race is part of the Columbia Running Club's “Tour de Columbia,” a series of races to promote running for fun and to assist the community by raising money for local non-profits. The race will be run on a certified course in residential neighborhoods behind the church and leading out onto Hwy 378. It will culminate with a pancake breakfast and awards ceremony at 9:30 a.m.

Adults and youth interested in participating in the run/walk should complete an event application by:
